Island Beehive

New Years on Kangaroo Island - Day 1

During the afternoon, we visited Island Beehive for some sampling of organic honey.  All the honey tasted lovely, and I especially liked the Stringy Bark.  Afternoon Tea was scones with a choice of strawberry jam or honey.  Wasn't too sure about scones and honey, so went for the safe option of jam.  As it was quite a warm day, we also indulged in some honeycomb ice-cream. Yummo!  The bee out the front of Island Beehive was pretty cool.  The eyes are solar panels and the antenna are the lights.
All KI honey is produced by the Ligurian honey bee, introduced from Italy in 1884 and the species has enjoyed isolated population status on the island for more than 100 years.  In order to protect and maintain this pure strain of bee, the Island was declared a sanctuary in 1885 and an embargo has been placed on the entry of bees and honey products to the Island.

Island Pure Sheep Dairy

New Years on Kangaroo Island - Day 1

During the afternoon, we visited Island Pure Sheep Dairy, which was opened at Cygnet River in 1992.  The dairy is well-known for its range of high quality Mediterranean-style cheeses and yoghurt.  The feta was especially tasty and the honey yoghurt was very smooth in texture.  About 400 odd ewes are milked daily and allows visitors the opportunity to see the process.  I felt sorry for some visitors who were turned away from being able to taste test the cheese and yoghurt.  Offering more friendliness may see more visitors staying there more than 5 minutes.

American River - All Seasons Kangaroo Island Lodge

New Years on Kangaroo Island - Day 1

After Pennington Bay, we headed to All Seasons Kangaroo Island Lodge @ American River for a BBQ lunch.  There's nothing like sitting down to a BBQ with a beer on a warm day.  The alresco area of the lodge had great views overlooking American River.  David & I went for a walk down to the river bank to grab some pics after lunch.  The river was abundant with Pelicans, Pacific Gulls & Silver Gulls.

Pennington Bay

New Years on Kangaroo Island - Day 1

Once arriving at Kangaroo Island, the tour group of 40 boarded a couple of buses and headed towards Pennington Bay.  It came as no surprise that David & I were the youngest couple on the tour, but the folk on our mini bus were lovely and were always up for a chat and a laugh.  Pennington Bay is 9km away from American River and is a popular surf beach and place for swimming and fishing.

Kangaroo Island - New Years Eve

New Years on Kangaroo Island - Day 1

My partner, David & I took a short break to Kangaroo Island for 3 days on an Australian Air Holidays special New Years Eve tour.  The flight departed from Essendon Airport on a Fokker 50 aircraft.  The majority of the following photo's have been taken from inside the aircraft whilst flying slow and low over Kangaroo Island, so apologies for the quality.  I found it surprising that the landscape was very dry for December despite the volume of rain Kangaroo Island receives.
